Mahogany cylinder top desk stamped W. Priest
Early 19th century mahogany cylinder top desk stamped W. Priest, 1 & 2 Tudor Street, Blackfriars. Cylinder top opening to reveal interior with a tooled leather pull out writing surface enclosing a central ratchet-supported slope and two hinged covers above three wells, five pigeon holes, six real and four dummy satinwood small drawers. Contrasting satinwood with rosewood for interior against the overall mahogany. Six drawers on pedestal bases and cylinder top all with original working locks stamped Hobbs & Co, London. Some restorations to include veneer patching and leather patches to original skiver. Circa 1810. According to reference the Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700 - 1840 by C. Gilbert William Priest has been noted as a retailer of other makers furniture as well as his own. The quality of cabinet craftsmanship is very much akin to the furniture greats of Gillows & Co.
